Wellington eats
March 17, 2016

Wellington is an awesome place to live if you love food, which I do! There are so many options that cater to all tastes.

Here are my top 10 Wellington food joints

Fisherman’s Plate – Bond St

I was first introduced to this by my previous manager who went here for lunch every single day without fail and every time she would order the same thing.

It is ridiculously cheap and the food is incredible. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s mostly Vietnamese but also does your standard fish and chip meals. My favourite thing to order here is the beef pho. It is perfect on a rainy day! I think most of Wellington agrees with this as it’s impossible to get a table when it’s raining outside.

Wellington eats

Dragonfly – Courtenay Place

Dragonfly is a lovely restaurant in the centre of town. The food, cocktails and service are all amazing. There food is a little bit of Asian Fusion. They have dumplings, shumai, red curry – everything amazing really!

My favourite dish here would have to be the seared yellowfin tuna – it’s just amazing and it will have you wanting more.

Thai Chef – Blair St

The best Thai in Wellington in my opinion. The menu is extensive and always delicious. I can’t pick one favourite dish so I’m going to give you my top dishes! Tofu pad thai is always good and if you’re after a hearty and filling meal this is it! My fiancé’s favourite dish is the Duck in love aka red duck curry (mmm) so good. Another must have is the naughty pig – roast pork and veges in a green curry sauce! This is all so good that it’s impossible for me to decide (I’m not going to lie, decisiveness is not one of my strengths)

The service is awesome too, quite often Blair will go and grab takeaways from there for our dinner and the manager recognises him and says hi and always takes such good care of his customers when dining in.

KK Malaysia – Ghuznee St

This is one of Wellington’s awesome cheap eats – perfect place to go if you’re wanting a quick in and out dinner. And it’s ridiculously cheap. Myself and 3 boys went there recently and it came to $46 for all of us and we were all stuffed! I particularly like the me goreng and the nasi goreng – the Hainese chicken is also tasty.

Library – Courtenay Place

Wellington’s best cocktails – I particularly like their espresso martinis! I’ve never really thought of Library as a dinner place until recently. The menu is incredible – the beef carpaccio and handcut potato skins particularly stand out.

Seize – Lambton Quay

If you’re looking for yummy salads and raw slices then look no further. Seize Wellington has a wide variety of salads, wraps and other bits and pieces for lunch. My favourite is the mixed salad bowl where you can pick up to four of their daily salads. They also have the most amazing raw snickers slice you will ever eat (yip, really – it’s that good!). They also have epic coffee. An all round winner in my book.

Basque – Courtenay Place

Cheese croquettes anyone!? I rave about these, they are beyond delicious. How can you go wrong with melted cheese anyway! I love tapas style meals. Basque is the perfect place to go with a group of people and order a couple of plates each, dump it in the middle and have a bit of everything – no decisions needed. They also have sangria. Need I say more.

Mexico – Dixon St

Tacos, burritos, quesadillas.. all the good things in life can be found at Mexico. Including sangria! They change their menu each season and they always have specials so no matter when you go there’s always something new to try. My favourite things are the soft shell tacos (any of them) Mexico fried chicken (to die for) and the patatas!

They also do yummy churos if you’re that way inclined.

Beach Babylon

This is my favourite brunch spot in Wellington for 2 reasons. 1 – I can take my dog and she sits there watching all the people go by. They even have dog bowls and homemade dog biscuits for the visiting pups – how cute. I’m an eggs bene girl so that’s what I tend to order but I’ve also tried their potato rostis and breakfast burrito, both of which were also very enjoyable. I’ve also heard rave reviews about their pancakes and their salads – it’s one of those places where there really is something for everyone.

Charley Noble

Charley Noble is one of those places that manages to do everything amazingly. I’ve had pasta, steak tartar, whitebait sandwhiches to name a few and they’ve always been something special.

They also have awesome cocktails, wine and service, what more could you ask for!

What’s your favourite Wellington restaurant?
